General Information on the Bat-A-Thon

Bat-A-Thon Coordinator's Duties

Administration Schedule

Administration schedules have been distributed to your league-level coordinator.  Please contact your team coordinator or Ted Kornhoff to confirm volunteer times if necessary.   Questions regarding administrative duties should be directed to Kathie Smith and Tammy Shedd.

For admininistrative volunteers, we will hold two sessions, both at 7:30 p.m. in the Pickett Board Room. The first will be held on Tuesday, May 8th. This session is primarily for those who have not done this work before, but anyone who is experienced and cannot make the second session may come to this one. The second session will be held on Wednesday, May 16th. This is primarily for experienced people who have worked as team coordinator or under the tent before. Please be sure that YOU, the team coordinator AND your admininistrative volunteer BOTH attend one of these meetings. This will be the time for the admininistrative volunteers to sign up for their time slots. Also, we will be going over valuable information.

The field training session will be held on Sunday, May 13th at 6:30 p.m. at Jermantown (Providence) on the majors field. Please have your field volunteers attend that session.

Also, please let your teams know that on Bat-a-thon weekend everyone must park in the lower lot by the Single A field. We are not allowed to park in the new upper lot at all that weekend.

Bat-A-Thon Schedule

The Bat-A-Thon will be held at the Providence (Jermantown) Fields.  Team participants should arrive no less than one-half hour before the scheduled time with completed prize forms and sponsor sheets.

We have tried to take into consideration scheduled season games.   A team may negotiate to switch with another team directly.  Please notify Ted Kornhoff  if you have arranged a switch.

Bat-A-Thon Fundraiser

The AA, AAA, Majors & Junior League players will participate in a Bat-A-Thon as the fundraiser for their divisions. The top teams will receive a trip to a Bowie Bay Sox game.  To find helpful information about what a Bat-a-thon is and how it works, visit the John Benko Bat-a-thon web site.

The Bat-A-Thon will be held at Jermantown over the May18 through 20 weekend. Players and their families solicit people to sponsor the player and their team. Some people give flat donations, most make pledges, such as one cent per point. Each team is assigned a time slot on Bat-A-Thon day. Each player receives a set number of pitches from a pitching machine. After the Bat-A-Thon, players and families go back to their sponsors and collect their pledges.  Players will have the opportunity to earn awards and prizes which will be presented at an Award Ceremony on June 10th at Chilcott Field.

Each coach must recruit a Bat-A-Thon Coordinator for their Team.  Volunteer to be a Bat-A-Thon Team Coordinator.  The coordinators' duties are not difficult, but they are very important to the success of the program.

Bat-A-Thon Coordinator's Duties

Each coach must recruit a Bat-A-Thon Coordinator for their Team.  The Bat-A-Thon team coordinator must be positive, energetic and pleasantly persistent.

OUTLINE OF DUTIES:

  1. Be knowledgeable of the program
The coordinator must attend one general meeting. All guidelines, instructions and materials will be provided to the coordinator. They must read and become familiar with these materials.

The coordinator will present the program to the players and parents at a team meeting. The coach will assist with this presentation. (This should be scheduled after a game.)

  3. Solicitation follow-up
The coordinator and head coach set team goals. During the solicitation period, the coordinator should help motivate the players and families towards achieving their goal.

  4. The Bat-A-Thon
