Little League Baseball® is for
young people between the ages of 5 and 14 years of age. Fairfax Little
League is composed of three Little League franchised leagues -- American,
Dominion and National Leagues -- and three divisions -- Junior, Tee-Ball, and
Challenger Divisions. Note that League age is determined by the July 31
cut-off date specified by Little League Headquarters. If your birthday is
July 31 and you will be turning 5 on that day, you are considered a five-year
old for this season. If your birthday is August 1 and you will be turning
5 on that day, you are considered a four-year old for this season.
The Junior
Division is
an expansion of the Little League®
to accommodate young people who are league ages 13 and 14. The game is
played on a 90 foot field, the same as high school and college baseball.
Player evaluations
are held in February.
Each of the three leagues is made
up of minor teams and major teams.
The Major League
consists of skilled and experienced 10, 11 and 12 year olds. Selection on
a Major team is made through the draft system. Player
evaluations are held in February.
Minor League Baseball
includes three levels, A, AA, and AAA, and is for seven through twelve year
olds. Selection on AAA and AA levels is made based on
player evaluations which are held in February.
AAA Minors consists
primarily of 10, 11 and 12 year olds who have not yet attained the experience
or skill to participate in the major league.
AA Minors consists
primarily of nine year olds. Players are first introduced to a pitched
ball by another player. Batting and fielding is emphasized at this level.
A Minors consists
primarily of eight year olds. Batting and fielding are primary goals.
Introduction to pitched balls is made through coach pitch.
The Tee-Ball
Division (utilizing the batting tee rather than the pitched
ball), is for players ages five, six, and seven. Five and six year olds are
eligible for Tee-Ball only. It is essentially an instructional league
where hitting, throwing and catching a baseball are taught for the first
time. The ball is hit from a tee at home plate.
The Challenger
Division provides an opportunity for disabled children through age
21 to experience the Little League baseball dream.
